Friday marked one month since the start of school. Congratulations! And thank you for all your efforts!

Below you will read about:

1.       Emergency Lesson Plans

Please have emergency lesson plans handed to the Secondary Grade Level Leaders (homeroom teachers) by the end of the day Monday.

These lesson plans will make it easier for yourself if you are sick, your colleagues who will cover for you, and the students.

2.       Assemblies

There will be two assemblies this week for students and parents regarding university preparation and readiness.

Grade 8-9 Thursday 2:00

Grade 10-11 Friday 2:00

If you are teaching one of these classes at this time, please escort them to the auditorium at 1:55 and sit with them in the auditorium.

3.       Classroom Walkthrough Visits

This week we will start organized classroom walkthroughs to support teaching and learning. Members of the school leadership team will make short 5-10 minute visits to classrooms. We will be looking for evidence of classroom practices we have been talking about this year. We will start with the secondary school this week.

What to expect:

·         Tues, Weds, Thursday after Breakfast, before lunch

·         Teams of two will visit a room

·         Short visit 5-10 minutes

·         Look at the whiteboard

·         Short discussion with students (What are you doing in class)

·         Quick look at the class journal or exercise book

·         Email at the end of the day identify practices and research that support the practices

What we will look for

·         Evidence of Lesson Structure and practiced transition routines (See the previous post) Grade 6-11

·         Evidence of student engagement 6-11

·         Evidence of Do Now Grade Grades 6-11

·         Use of classroom journal 6-8

·         Evidence of Summary Activities 6-11

·         Evidence of class routines and management of class material (The book for this class are out and being used, books for other classes, bag, coats etc. are in the cubby. 6-8 students should be dismissed from the room, the teacher should be the last one out and close the door)

 

4.       Classroom Discipline Protocol

This week in Class meeting students will sign the code of conduct.

If a student is repeatedly disruptive, the subject teacher may assign detention

Protocol for Issuing Student Detention

  1. The Teacher Should: Remind individual students of the code of conduct if they are disrupting class. The teacher can also remind the student that detention is a CHOICE made by the student. If they chose not to follow instructions, they choose detention.
  2. The Teacher Should, if the behavior persists, assign student detention in that grade level room at the nearest break: Breakfast, Lunch, Afterschool (If at this point you need to remove them from the room send them to Mr. Patrick's Office.  I may hold them for 10 minutes before sending them back to class)
  3. The Teacher Should: Notify the grade level leader so they can coordinate having the students in the room at the break
  4.  The Teacher Should: Run the detention. Detention is run BY THE TEACHER assigning it. 20 minutes. Be in the room on time
  5. The Teacher Should: Have the students complete a “Behavior Report” during detention. Each grade level leader has one
  6. The Teacher should: Have them practice the procedure that they violated (Raising hand, etc). Research shows it takes 18 times to break a bad habit and 3 times to learn a new one. Have them Raise their hands 21 times. Each time explaining why.
  7. Give the behavior report to the Grade Level Leader so the grade leader can contact home
  8. Grade leader message the parents that the student had detention and cc it to Mr. Patrick, then give Mr. Patrick the Behavior report

I support disciplinary action against persistent disruptive behavior, I also encourage teacher accountability. Student participation in class is first and foremost the responsibility of the classroom instructor.

In addition to questions about what the student did and how often they were doing it in your class, I will be concerned with questions such as “What was the do now, how was it implemented? What were the students instructed to be doing when this student was being disruptive-what was he or she supposed to be doing at that time? Have you practiced routines for transitions and quieting the class”?

·         Repeated detentions will lead to a parent meeting with me according to the Code of Conduct.

·         Continued disruption after this will lead to referral to the disciplinary committee made up of the Grade Level Leader, Mr. Patrick, School Psychologist, Ms. Lima.

 

 

5.       Update to Schedule

 

This week we added more than 7 courses into the timetable in German, Spanish, Russian, PE, Music. Unfortunately, this has impacted the timing of some other classes as we searched for room on the schedule. In the past two weeks we have made about a dozen changes at teachers requests, about adozen changes at the request of students and course selection, and about a dozen changes to be sure we are meeting the requirements of the program. The change of one timing impacts the whole system.

There will probably be a new one Friday, but that should mostly be dealing with including new staff member names and correcting some room numbers, and addressing any issues that may show up this week. There will hopefully be few changes to timing. Hopefully, this Friday will be the final version.
